With COVID -19, increased prevalence of substance use, the disorder, worsening of complications in a country with high prevalence of substance use (14.4%, 14.3 million people) and 566 substance use disorder in-patient treatment beds. There is need for quick, easy to use, validated history taking tool. The aim of this study was to validate the self-report Addiction Severity Index (ASI SR).

Methods:

Validation study of inpatients was using the Alcohol, Smoking, Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) , ASI SR and the Short- Form health survey for the validation of the medical and psychiatric subscales of ASI-SR

Results:

Seventy-four out of 154 patients scored moderate to high risk on ASSIST, age range was 19 -58years, and 82.4% were males. Concurrent validity of the ASI -SR medical and psychiatric subscales against the Short-form was r = -0.53, n=200, p ˂ 0.01 and r = – 0.30, n = 200, p=0.02 respectively. Test-retest reliability of all the subscales showed no significant difference except family with social p=0.04. The α of ASI SR was 0.638.

Conclusion:

The ASI-SR is a promising tool. However, the health subscales should be further developed, researched and adapted to make it valid for use in Nigerian clinical settings.
