Epidemiology of Substance Abuse Among the Youths in Makueni County, Kenya

This study explored the prevalence and contributing factors of substance abuse among youths in Makueni County, Kenya. Using a mixed-method approach, data was collected from 384 participants across eight urban centres. Findings showed that 62.3% of respondents had used drugs, with alcohol being the most commonly abused. Key drivers included peer pressure, unemployment, media influence, and drug availability. Faith-based and community leaders were linked to lower rates of use. The study calls for stronger measures from government and community stakeholders to address the issue.
