Tanzania Held The First Universal Recovery Curriculum Training in Tanzania

The first-ever Universal Recovery Curriculum (URC) training for Peer Recovery Support Professionals was held in Tanga City from 11–16 December 2025, marking a major milestone in advancing recovery-oriented care in Tanzania. The event was opened by Dr. Peter Mfisi from the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA) and closed by Tanga’s Deputy Mayor, Mr. Khalidi Rashid, highlighting strong national and local government backing.

Hosted by the Gift of Hope Foundation, the training was delivered in partnership with the DCEA, Colombo Plan – Drug Advisory Programme, ISSUP Tanzania, and the Focus on Youth, Not the Substance project under the TangaYetu Programme, supported by Fondation Botnar.

A team of expert master trainers led participants through modules centered on recovery science, ethics, peer support practice, trauma-informed care, communication, and relapse prevention. The program equipped recovering substance users with essential skills to deliver ethical, evidence-based support within their communities.

The initiative is expected to boost the quality and standardization of peer-led recovery services, promote collaboration among stakeholders, and build a skilled recovery workforce—contributing to stronger, safer, and more resilient communities in Tanga and beyond.
