Marsiglia, F. F., Kulis, S. S., Munyuwiny, S., Cutrín, O., Gresenz, K., Osir, O., & Huang, C. K. (2023). A Pilot Study of an Evidence-Based Prevention Intervention (keepin’it REAL) for Early Adolescents in Kenyan Schools. Journal of studies on alcohol and drugs, 84(1), 45-50

Objective:

Although many primary school students in Kenya report use of alcohol and other drugs, evidence-based prevention interventions for schools are generally unavailable. Globally, there are growing opportunities to conduct research that assesses whether efficacious interventions from elsewhere can be adopted for new settings and populations. This small pilot study implemented and evaluated a linguistically adapted version of the school-based keepin’ it REAL (kiR) universal substance use prevention program from the United States in Kenyan primary schools to assess its effectiveness and...

In this 2-part “Learning Lab” series, we will describe and explore a) how the 4 E’s can be applied in prevention work and b) how the 4 E’s can be implemented throughout the Strategic Prevention Framework.

Participants will...

These are among the findings from the latest report from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD). There are some aspects of parental life that are always — no matter the generational, geographical or cultural background — a...

The consequences of addiction to substances like drugs and alcohol, or engaging in certain behaviours like gambling, gaming, or sex, can be severe. Addiction is often a response to underlying trauma and social stressors, and continued use of these substances or behaviours can create additional physical, psychological, and social problems.

In July 2021, the University of Birmingham launched a peer-led support program for students wishing to maintain abstinence-based recovery (Better Than Well; BTW).

The programme aims to provide:

INTRODUCTION: As the prevalence of substance use continues to rise all over the world amidst the ongoing pandemic, substance use prevention professionals are challenged to find alternative ways to enhance their knowledge and competence to use the best practices in the field. The aim of this study is to explore how the different aspects of a substance use prevention online course affected the overall effectiveness of the programme. ...
