ISSUP Nigeria Celebrates Leadership Transition

ISSUP Nigeria marked a major milestone with a leadership transition ceremony that combined the inauguration of new executive officers with a warm send-off for the outgoing team. The moment signalled continuity, renewal, and the beginning of a fresh chapter for the National Chapter in Nigeria.

In her first remarks to the media, the newly inaugurated President, Dr. Olajumoke Koyejo, declared that a new era of youth-driven leadership had begun, describing the moment as “Youth O’Clock in ISSUP Nigeria.” She outlined her administration’s vision to deepen the society’s national impact through increased digital visibility, stronger youth engagement, and expanded professional training across every state. Speaking on the role of technology in prevention, she emphasised that digital tools remain powerful platforms for reaching young people:

“These young people are always online. Through technology, we can teach self-esteem, coping skills, and stress management; evidence-based practices that help prevent addiction.”

She added that her administration would also prioritise training journalists on responsible addiction reporting, noting that the media plays an essential role in shaping public attitudes toward substance use and recovery.

In his farewell address, outgoing President, Dr. Martins Agwogie reflected on ISSUP Nigeria’s extraordinary journey from its humble beginnings in 2017 to its current status as a respected national professional body. He recalled how an organisation that began with just three founding members has grown into a vibrant network of more than 700 registered national members and over 3,000 Nigerians engaged through the global ISSUP platform, supported by strong zonal and state structures across all six geopolitical zones. Who would have thought that the small seed planted by just three of us in 2017 would grow into a mighty oak?” he asked, noting the association’s rise to national and international recognition.

A touching moment during the ceremony was the presentation of a special plaque from ISSUP Global to Dr. Agwogie which captured the profound respect and gratitude for his leadership and the foundation he built over the years.

Dr. Agwogie also highlighted the inclusive, multidisciplinary spirit that has defined the Chapter’s growth; bringing together law enforcement personnel, public health experts, policymakers, faith-based leaders, academics, researchers, and young professionals in a shared mission to promote a healthier, drug-free society.

“We have shown that collaboration across disciplines is not only possible but also effective,” he noted. “Psychologists, psychiatrists, pharmacists, nurses, teachers, and even students have worked side by side without rivalry or hierarchy, united by mutual respect and a common vision.”

He outlined key achievements under his leadership, including strengthened capacity building, enhanced professional competence and ethical standards, and the successful introduction of addiction studies programmes in Nigerian tertiary institutions through strategic partnerships. These accomplishments, he said, form a strong foundation upon which the new executive team will build.

With Dr. Koyejo and her team now leading the Chapter, ISSUP Nigeria steps confidently into a new chapter one defined by innovation, youth leadership, and an even stronger national impact on substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery support.
