Teaching assertiveness in an age appropriate way

Drusilla Blinker - 22 December 2019

At the session I had with students from the 8th grade of O.S. Ephraïmzegen I had to talk about drugs and the body. In this session I tried to teach the children the life skill assertiveness. I did this by having one of the kids(the young boy in the video) draw an umbrella. After this I got them to list certain things they think about when they see this umbrella. They listed: protection, sun, rain and health. After hearing this I helped them in explaining why they listed these things and it was that an umbrella is used for protection against the sun and rain in order to stay healthy. Our mind is the umbrella of our lives. We can use this to protect us against unhealthy things. Just like we have the responsiblity in holding up the umbrella up right and keep on holding tight when a strong wind blows, we have to stay strong and know how to say no and make the right choice no matter how hard it gets.
