ISSUP Nigeria Supports Substance Use Prevention Sensitization Programme for Postgraduate Students at the University of Ibadan

ISSUP Nigeria, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of Guidance and Counselling (University of Ibadan), organised a Substance Use Prevention Sensitization Programme for postgraduate students.

The programme aimed to strengthen participants' knowledge and understanding of evidence-based substance use prevention while equipping them with practical skills and preventive strategies to address substance use challenges within educational institutions and the wider community.

Participants explored the causes, risk and protective factors, and consequences of substance use, while gaining a deeper appreciation of the vital role that psychologists and counsellors play in promoting mental health, preventing drug misuse, and supporting individuals, families, and communities through early intervention, education, and advocacy .

The programme featured expert presentations from facilitators representing ISSUP Nigeria, NDLEA, and the Department of Guidance and Counselling. Key topics included current trends in substance use, prevention science, life skills development, early identification of individuals at risk, and the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration among mental health professionals, educators, families, communities, and law enforcement agencies in building healthier, drug-free communities.

The sessions were highly interactive, with participants actively contributing to discussions, asking insightful questions, and reflecting on how evidence-based prevention strategies can be integrated into their future professional practice and community engagement.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment among participants to champion evidence-based substance use prevention and mental health promotion. By strengthening the capacity of future psychologists and counsellors, the initiative contributes to building a skilled workforce capable of advancing prevention efforts and fostering healthier communities across Nigeria.

ISSUP remains committed to supporting partnerships that promote prevention science, strengthen professional capacity, and advance evidence-based approaches to reducing substance use and improving public health outcomes.
