ISSUP Hosts Three-Part Webinar Series on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Substance Use Disorders

ISSUP Indonesia, ISSUP Sri Lanka and ISSUP Kazakhstan, welcome you to a three-part webinar series on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders.

This regional webinar series will explore how CBT can be applied and adapted to address substance use disorders across diverse populations and service settings in Asia. Bringing together experts from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and international organisations, the series will examine evidence-based approaches to treatment, recovery support, and mental health care in clinical, community, correctional, and humanitarian contexts.

Across three sessions, participants will gain valuable insights into the principles and practical application of CBT, including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Therapy, Relapse Prevention, Contingency Management, and the Community Reinforcement Approach. The series will also highlight the importance of integrated care for individuals experiencing co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The first webinar, hosted by ISSUP Sri Lanka, will provide an introduction to CBT for substance use disorders and showcase practical implementation examples from the Sri Lankan context. Presentations from experienced practitioners will demonstrate how evidence-based interventions can be effectively adapted within local clinical and community rehabilitation settings.

The second webinar, led by ISSUP Indonesia, will focus on methamphetamine use disorder and the significant social and psychiatric burden associated with methamphetamine use in Indonesia. Participants will learn about the development and implementation of the Indo-SURFT programme, a culturally adapted and gender-sensitive group CBT intervention designed for incarcerated women with methamphetamine use disorder.

The final session, hosted by ISSUP Kazakhstan, will examine the application of CBT in humanitarian and complex care settings. Presenters will share experiences from Kazakhstan's pilot CBT programme for people who use new psychoactive substances (NPS), alongside insights from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on integrated mental health and psychosocial support services for survivors of trauma, displacement, and other humanitarian challenges.

Together, these three webinars provide a unique opportunity to explore how CBT can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse populations, including individuals with co-occurring mental health conditions, people who use methamphetamine and NPS, incarcerated populations, migrants, displaced communities, and other vulnerable groups.

We invite practitioners, policymakers, researchers, students, and anyone interested in evidence-based approaches to substance use treatment and recovery to join us for this important series.
