INEBRIA–ICUDDR Thematic Meeting 2026

For the first time, the International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol and Other Drugs (INEBRIA) and the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) will co-host a thematic meeting in Africa focused on the future of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) across the continent, in collaboration with the Uganda Ministry of HealthMakerere University, and the World Health Organization’s SAFER Initiative Uganda Office.

This two-day meeting will bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, educators, and implementation leaders working in substance use and mental health. Participants will take stock of current SBIRT efforts in African contexts, examine ongoing implementation challenges, and explore opportunities to strengthen SBIRT integration within health, community, and academic systems.

Through research presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, the program will emphasize practical lessons, regional diversity, and cross-country learning. The meeting offers a unique opportunity to connect with regional and global peers, contribute to Africa-centered knowledge, and help shape future directions for SBIRT research, policy, and practice.

Key Topics

The meeting will focus on:

  • Taking stock of SBIRT in Africa: Where are we now?
  • Planning the future: Opportunities for scale-up, sustainability, and systems change
  • SBIRT in the context of the WHO SAFER initiative
  • Education, training, and workforce development
  • Policy, research, and evaluation priorities
  • Student and early-career contributions
