Summary of key findings

The evolving youth use of e-cigarettes in Britain is monitored using the ASH Smokefree GB survey of 11-18 year olds 2013-2022 (see Appendix 2 for methodology), in the context of changes in tobacco use and the regulation of e-cigarettes (see Appendix 1). We present the results for 11-17 year olds separately from 18 year olds. It is an offence to sell e-cigarettes to children under 18 in the United Kingdom.

The term vicarious trauma (Perlman & Saakvitne, 1995), sometimes also called compassion fatigue, is the latest term that describes the phenomenon generally associated with the “cost of caring” for others (Figley, 1982). Other terms used for compassion fatigue are:

  • secondary traumatic stress (Stemm, 1995, 1997)

  • secondary victimization (Figley, 1982)

People who use drugs can be particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 due to underlying health issues, stigma, social marginalization and higher economic and social vulnerabilities, including a lack of access to housing and health care.
