Everyday discrimination and substance use
Adfam organises forum events for practitioners and professionals with an interest in supporting families affected by substance use or gambling.
At each forum we focus on a unique topic relating to families and substance use, inviting a guest speaker with expertise in that topic, followed by a Q&A and wider discussion.
At our latest event we will be focusing on regulations surrounding prescription drugs. We are delighted to be joined by guest speaker Dr Andrew Jones, Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University.
Dr Jones will be presenting on a recently published research study focusing on the experiences of everyday discrimination experienced by individuals seeking treatment or receiving support for substance use and their caregivers. Key findings include:
- A higher rate of everyday discrimination is reported by individuals seeking / receiving treatment for substance use, as well as caregivers.
- Friends and family were often the source of everyday discrimination.
- Everyday discrimination may play an indirect role in wellbeing.
The full research study is available here.
Join our online event to find out about the study's key findings in more detail.
