The Stigma of Substance Use

About this Event

Dr Liviu Alexandrescu Lecturer in Criminology School of History, Philosophy and Culture – Oxford Brookes University

Presentation title: Drug/dependency stigma and marginality: some reflections on the political economy of blame

About Liviu

Liviu’s research interests lie at the crossroads of criminology, sociology and culture/media studies. His work focuses on how traditional and new psychoactive substances intersect with structural inequalities to create ‘spoiled identities’ and stigma formations among some of the most vulnerable groups. He observes this in different cultural and political contexts, from the media and popular imaginaries of Eastern Europe to those of austerity Britain. Liviu is currently a lecturer in criminology at Oxford Brookes University, where he teaches modules on the political economy of crime, cultural criminology, transnational comparative criminology or drug culture and policy, among other areas of scholarship.
