Online training - Hidden Harm: Children Affected by Parental Substance Use
This course explores Hidden Harm, the often unseen impact of parental substance use on children and young people. It supports professionals and volunteers to recognise both the immediate and long-term effects on children, even when families appear to be coping.
Participants will build confidence in identifying risk, understanding barriers to disclosure, and using professional curiosity to respond effectively and compassionately to substance use within families.

Learning outcomes:
- Understand how parental substance use can lead to acute and chronic harms for children and young people
- Recognise signs of hidden harm across different ages and stages
- Identify barriers that prevent children from being seen, heard, or supported
- Apply professional curiosity to explore concerns safely and respectfully
- Look at choice of language and conversation starters to initiate engagement
- Balance safeguarding responsibilities with non-judgemental, family-centred practice
- Support earlier intervention to reduce long-term harm
This course takes places over Zoom, participants must be able to access Zoom to take part. Colleagues that register will be sent the Zoom link a week before the start of the training.
