Can We ‘Switch Off’ Our Need to Drink Alcohol?

New research by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) may lead to the development of personalised treatments for alcohol dependence. The study evaluated how people’s responses in the brain differ to various therapeutic treatments. The findings will be published in The Journal of Neuroscience.
In a follow-up investigation, researchers found that the brain may have an alcohol response ‘button’ that could potentially be 'switched off'. This would help alcoholics voluntary reduce their alcohol consumption.
The lead author of the study hopes that such findings will eventually lead to improved ways of treating alcohol dependence.
