Drs. Kariisa and Roehler will provide an overview of CDC’s Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance (ESOOS) program. We will highlight the three key strategies CDC is employing to improve opioid-related overdose surveillance.
Mbabazi Kariisa is a Health Scientist in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention in CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and serves as a science officer focusing on mortality-related activities for CDC’s Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance program. Prior to joining NCIPC, she worked as an injury epidemiologist for the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus. Mbabazi receiver her PhD in Epidemiology from The Ohio State University and an MPH in International Health from the University of Michigan.
Douglas Roehler, PhD, MPH, is a Health Scientist on the overdose epidemiology and surveillance team in CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, where he supports the morbidity activities for the CDC’s Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance (ESOOS). He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago where he focused on child injury prevention. Doug received his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
