Studying Tobacco users Of Pakistan (STOP) Factsheet

Project Goals and Objectives:

The STOP survey has a long-term aim to provide objective, regular and timely information on tobacco users of Pakistan to help key policy decisions. Its specific objectives for 2019/2020 are to assess the:

  1. Proportion of cigarette smokers who use illicit
  2. Nicotine dependence and motivation to quit among
  3. Triggers to, the methods used in, and the success of quit
  4. Attitude of smokers towards tobacco control policies and cessation aides (including the willingness to pay) e.g. counselling, medication, e-cigarettes.

This surveyย is being in the 10 most populous cities of Pakistan with a target population of 40,956,323 smokers

Training of Trainers on UPC Course 2, Physiology and Pharmacology for Prevention Specialists

A 4 days virtual training on Universal Prevention Curriculum Course 2, โ€œPhysiology and Pharmacology for Prevention Specialistsโ€ from 02 to 05 November 2020 kicked off today by UNODC to add into pool of national master trainers on substance use prevention working in Pakistan, funded by INL and supported by Ministry of Narcotics Control Govt. of Paksitanย and Prevention Treatment and Rehabilitation Section UNODC HQ.

This intervention focuses on building the capacity of professionals as trainers from health, education, law enforcement and civil society organizations on substance use prevention.

A seminar on the role of youth in substance use prevention was conducted by Youth Forum Pakistanโ€™s Team Sialkot in collaboration with ISSUP Pakistan at New Life Rehab Center onย 20th of June.

Director of ISSUP Pakistan Chapter Ms. Saima Asghar kicked off the Seminar offeringย aย warm welcomeย to all the team members and audience and shared her views regarding drug abuse prevention. After,ย Mr. Aslam, the President of M.A Jinnah Foundation and advisory board member of Youth Forum Pakistan, shared his view on the topicย of the event.

Then starting from the President of Sialkot team Ms. Iqra Tahir, General Secretary Mr. Saqlain, Information Secretary Ms.Khinsha and Event manager Muhadisaย  and Ali Hussain, Executive Member contributed their words and their dedication of working on the behalf of the team that in future how this problem can be addressed and further workable processes would be ledย to meet the goals of ISSUP Pakistan & Youth Forum Pakistan Drug Abuse Prevention. Commemoration of 26th June International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by ISSUP Pakistan, Youth Forum Pakistan (For Substance Use Prevention), in Colleberation with M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Sialkot, New Life Rehab, Sialkot-Pakistan and Anti Narcotics Force, Punjab Organizes a organised a seminar on 26th June, 2020 at New Life Rehab, Sialkot. Thereย were discussionsย about the impact of Better Knowledge for Better Care in the services for people suffering from Substance Use Disorders.

Course Description

This is a training inย evidence-basedย clinical methods of motivational interviewing (MI). After orientation to the underlying spirit and principles of MI,ย practical exercisesย will help participants to strengthen empathy skills, recognize and elicit change talk, and roll with resistance. Research evidence will be reviewed for the efficacy of MI and for the importance of building therapeutic relationships in clientsโ€™ outcomes. Integration of MI with other treatment modalities will be considered.ย ย  ย ย 

Course Objectives

The goal is to provide knowledge and practical skill training for various practitioners on effective ways to enhance motivation of patients with substance use disorders that requireย significant behavioral changesย to initiate and sustain positive and healthy behavioral choices. Skill building, and experiential training will be emphasized throughout the course by exercises to develop a therapeutic alliance with patients, assess patient needs, level of engagement in treatment process, structure treatment sessions, select appropriate interventions, and assist patient in maintaining motivation for a sustainable behavioral change.

Participants will learn the basic and advanced skills in motivational interviewing andย strategies for engaging patients in collaborative relationship in treatment process and assist them in achieving sustainable positive behavioral changes. The course will:

  1. Help participants to acquire a systemic perspective of motivational interviewing and other motivational enhancement strategies;
  2. Build necessary clinical skills and attitudes to implement new strategies in working with ambivalent patients.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, every participant will be able to:

  1. Describe all the aspects of the spirit of MI
  2. Explain the differences between MI and other counselling strategies
  3. Demonstrate the ability to respond to clients with reflective listening statements
  4. Identify change talk within client speech
  5. Generate open questions designed to elicit change talk
  6. Generate MI-consistent responses to client resistant statements
  7. Differentiate commitment language from other forms of change talk
  8. Provide and empathetic summary statements collecting change talk

About Professor Koutsenok

Dr. Igor Koutsenok is ะฐ Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego, Director of the Center for Addiction Research, Training and Application, Director of the SAMHSA PEPFAR International Addiction Technology Transfer Center-Ukraine, and a co-director of the SAMHSA PEPFAR South East Asia Addiction Technology Transfer Center. He is also a Vice-President of the International Consortium of Universities on Drug Demand Reduction.

In 1983 he graduated as a medical doctor from the National Medical University in Kiev, (Ukraine). In 1986, he completed his psychiatry residency training and received degree as psychiatrist from the Medical University in Sofia (Bulgaria). In 1993-1996 he received a degree in addiction psychiatry at the University of London, Department of Addictive Behavior and Psychological Medicine at St. Georges Hospital Medical School. In 1996, he was recruited by the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and since then he serves as faculty member of the Department. In 2013-2016 he served as Chief of Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Office in Vienna.

Over the last 25 years Dr. Koutsenok led the design and implementation of multiple training and technical assistance programs for mental health and addiction treatment practitioners, primary health care and social work practitioners, criminal justice professionals in the United States and around the world. He is also directing the UCSD Summer Clinical Institute - the second longest running Summer Institute in the United States (over 40 years). Dr. Koutsenok is also a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).ย 

For many years, Dr. Koutsenok taughtย general and addiction psychiatry to medical students, psychiatry residents, psychology trainees, social workers, criminal justice professionals, and policy makers around the world.ย He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards. He has authored and co-authored over 50 scientific publications, one monograph, and contributed to 4 book. Dr. Koutsenok has been invited as a presenter and trainer to hundreds of conferences and workshops in the USA and more than 40 countries around the world. He is a proud father of three.

Awareness Seminar for Govt. Faqir Muhammad Collage, Gujranwala Organised by Mian Afzal Trust Hospital Gujranwala Pakistan

An awareness seminar, organised for students of Social Work Department, Government Faqir Muhammad Faqir (FMF) College, Gujranwala by Mian Afzal Trust Hospital (MATH),ย took place inย the MATH Conference Hall.

A large number students and faculty Members of FMF College participated in the event.

Ms Shahid Zaheer, Psychologist MATH briefed about treatment and rehabilitation services of MATH.

Later on Mr. Muhammad Javed said that there is opportunity for the students to select rehabilitation field asย a carrier.

Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore, Director MATHย welcomesย the students and faculty. He also described theย social and biological effects of drug addiction. He also saidย thatย youthย should participate inย healthyย activities rather than indulge in drug in drug addiction. He also thanks faulty who paidย a visitย of MATH with students of social work so that they can seeย the practical social workย in the field. Later on Students had a facility run of MATH.
