Training of Trainers on UPC Course 2, Physiology and Pharmacology for Prevention Specialists

A 4 days virtual training on Universal Prevention Curriculum Course 2, “Physiology and Pharmacology for Prevention Specialists” from 02 to 05 November 2020 kicked off today by UNODC to add into pool of national master trainers on substance use prevention working in Pakistan, funded by INL and supported by Ministry of Narcotics Control Govt. of Paksitan and Prevention Treatment and Rehabilitation Section UNODC HQ.

This intervention focuses on building the capacity of professionals as trainers from health, education, law enforcement and civil society organizations on substance use prevention.

Seminar on the Role of Youth in Substance Use Prevention at Sialkot - Pakistan

A seminar on the role of youth in substance use prevention was conducted by Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team Sialkot in collaboration with ISSUP Pakistan at New Life Rehab Center on 20th of June.

Director of ISSUP Pakistan Chapter Ms. Saima Asghar kicked off the Seminar offering a warm welcome to all the team members and audience and shared her views regarding drug abuse prevention. After, Mr. Aslam, the President of M.A Jinnah Foundation and advisory board member of Youth Forum Pakistan, shared his view on the topic of the event.

Then starting from the President of Sialkot team Ms. Iqra Tahir, General Secretary Mr. Saqlain, Information Secretary Ms.Khinsha and Event manager Muhadisa  and Ali Hussain, Executive Member contributed their words and their dedication of working on the behalf of the team that in future how this problem can be addressed and further workable processes would be led to meet the goals of ISSUP Pakistan & Youth Forum Pakistan Drug Abuse Prevention. Sharing the views and taking feedback from the audience the event came to its end with the future commitment and dedication and after that honorary shields were also distributed among active members of ISSUP Pakistan.

Commemoration of 26th June International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by ISSUP Pakistan, Youth Forum Pakistan (For Substance Use Prevention), in Colleberation with M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Sialkot, New Life Rehab, Sialkot-Pakistan and Anti Narcotics Force, Punjab Organizes a organised a seminar on 26th June, 2020 at New Life Rehab, Sialkot. There were discussions about the impact of Better Knowledge for Better Care in the services for people suffering from Substance Use Disorders.

Course Description

This is a training in evidence-based clinical methods of motivational interviewing (MI). After orientation to the underlying spirit and principles of MI, practical exercises will help participants to strengthen empathy skills, recognize and elicit change talk, and roll with resistance. Research evidence will be reviewed for the efficacy of MI and for the importance of building therapeutic relationships in clients’ outcomes. Integration of MI with other treatment modalities will be considered.     

Course Objectives

The goal is to provide knowledge and practical skill training for various practitioners on effective ways to enhance motivation of patients with substance use disorders that require significant behavioral changes to initiate and sustain positive and healthy behavioral choices. Skill building, and experiential training will be emphasized throughout the course by exercises to develop a therapeutic alliance with patients, assess patient needs, level of engagement in treatment process, structure treatment sessions, select appropriate interventions, and assist patient in maintaining motivation for a sustainable behavioral change.

Participants will learn the basic and advanced skills in motivational interviewing and strategies for engaging patients in collaborative relationship in treatment process and assist them in achieving sustainable positive behavioral changes. The course will:

  1. Help participants to acquire a systemic perspective of motivational interviewing and other motivational enhancement strategies;
  2. Build necessary clinical skills and attitudes to implement new strategies in working with ambivalent patients.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, every participant will be able to:

  1. Describe all the aspects of the spirit of MI
  2. Explain the differences between MI and other counselling strategies
  3. Demonstrate the ability to respond to clients with reflective listening statements
  4. Identify change talk within client speech
  5. Generate open questions designed to elicit change talk
  6. Generate MI-consistent responses to client resistant statements
  7. Differentiate commitment language from other forms of change talk

About Professor Koutsenok

Dr. Igor Koutsenok is а Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego, Director of the Center for Addiction Research, Training and Application, Director of the SAMHSA PEPFAR International Addiction Technology Transfer Center-Ukraine, and a co-director of the SAMHSA PEPFAR South East Asia Addiction Technology Transfer Center. He is also a Vice-President of the International Consortium of Universities on Drug Demand Reduction.

In 1983 he graduated as a medical doctor from the National Medical University in Kiev, (Ukraine). In 1986, he completed his psychiatry residency training and received degree as psychiatrist from the Medical University in Sofia (Bulgaria). In 1993-1996 he received a degree in addiction psychiatry at the University of London, Department of Addictive Behavior and Psychological Medicine at St. Georges Hospital Medical School. In 1996, he was recruited by the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and since then he serves as faculty member of the Department. In 2013-2016 he served as Chief of Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Office in Vienna.

Over the last 25 years Dr. Koutsenok led the design and implementation of multiple training and technical assistance programs for mental health and addiction treatment practitioners, primary health care and social work practitioners, criminal justice professionals in the United States and around the world. He is also directing the UCSD Summer Clinical Institute - the second longest running Summer Institute in the United States (over 40 years). Dr. Koutsenok is also a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). 

For many years, Dr. Koutsenok taught general and addiction psychiatry to medical students, psychiatry residents, psychology trainees, social workers, criminal justice professionals, and policy makers around the world. He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards. He has authored and co-authored over 50 scientific publications, one monograph, and contributed to 4 book. Dr. Koutsenok has been invited as a presenter and trainer to hundreds of conferences and workshops in the USA and more than 40 countries around the world. He is a proud father of three.

Awareness Seminar for Govt. Faqir Muhammad Collage, Gujranwala Organised by Mian Afzal Trust Hospital Gujranwala Pakistan

An awareness seminar, organised for students of Social Work Department, Government Faqir Muhammad Faqir (FMF) College, Gujranwala by Mian Afzal Trust Hospital (MATH), took place in the MATH Conference Hall.

A large number students and faculty Members of FMF College participated in the event.

Ms Shahid Zaheer, Psychologist MATH briefed about treatment and rehabilitation services of MATH.

Later on Mr. Muhammad Javed said that there is opportunity for the students to select rehabilitation field as a carrier.

Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore, Director MATH welcomes the students and faculty. He also described the social and biological effects of drug addiction. He also said that youth should participate in healthy activities rather than indulge in drug in drug addiction. He also thanks faulty who paid a visit of MATH with students of social work so that they can see the practical social work in the field. Later on Students had a facility run of MATH.

 

Distribution of PPE Suits to Equip Hospital Staff and Sanitary Workers for the Fight Against Coronavirus BY ISSUP Pakistan

In these tough times, we, as ISSUP Pakistan Chapter, have started efforts to help the real heroes of Pakistan, our Doctors, Nurses, medical staff and especially Sanitary Workers, to provide them PPE Suits to fight against Coronavirus.

Ms. Saima Asghar said, "We, as ISSUP Pakistan, have been in contact with our medical community regarding their requirements", she added, “These suits are in line with their specifications as well.”

Mr. Bashir Naz, President ISSUP Pakistan, also highlighted the continuous efforts to be socially responsible. While asked about the rationale behind his new endeavor, he said: “We, as ISSUP Pakistan, have always wanted to lend a helping hand to those in need. This is our country and our duty to assist wherever we can."

Inauguration of New SUD Treatment Facility ‘’Dr. Rehab Clinic International’’, Islamabad and Meeting with ISSUP Members & Youth Forum Pakistans Team Islamabad

Mr. Shafique Anwar, Clinical Psychologist & CEO of the Subhan Medical Centre, organised an Inauguration Ceremony to establish a new treatment facility at Bani Gala, Islamabad. The name of the new centre is ‘’Dr. Rehab Clinic International’’ and the aim of the project is to provide a SUD Treatment and Rehabilitation facility as well as a place for Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team Islamabad to hold meetings. 

Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naz, President ISSUP Pakistan, was invited as Chief Guest to inaugurate this facility along with Ms. Saima Asghar, Director ISSUP Pakistan, Muhammad Aslam, President M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Dr. Iftikhar, Director ISSUP Pakistan, Sialkot, Dr. Talat Habib, CEO Nishan Rehab, Mr. Asif Mubeen & Mr. Gulnaz Asif.

Youth Forum Pakistan and Ehsas For Life Organization (Regd), Lahore Organizsed a meeting with ISSUP
Members and with Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team Lahore. The aim of the meeting was to discuss and assign responsilbolities for National Youth Convention and Anti Drug Painting Competition.

On behalf of Ms. Saima Asghar, Director of ISSUP Pakistan and Chief Organiser of the up coming Event ‘’National Youth Convention’’, Ms. Naghmana Jamil Awan, chairperson for Ehsas For Life, Lahore and Member Advisory Board Youth Forum Pakistan,  Chaired the meeting and assigned the roles and responsibilties according to Teams’s abilties.

Ms. Maria Tahir, President of the Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team, took on the responsibility to check the final list of
partcipants and reminded them to be punctual at the event.

Mr. Waseem Hassan was assigned the role aof Stage Secretary during the event and it was also agreed that Ms. Amber, President Youth Foru Pakistan, would share this responsibility as well.

Mr. Faheem was assigned to display all the Paitings at Al-Hamra Art Council’s Hall under his supervision.

Mr. Faizan rasheed assinged the resposibilty to collect Shields and Certificates. The rest of the team members were assigned different Duties to make the event successful.

COVID-19: Distribution of Food and Water to People with Substance Use Disorders

The Drug Advisory training Hub (DATH) have been distributing meals to people suffering from addiction and substance use disorders living homeless in public spaces across Lahore, Pakistan.

Syed Zulfiqar Hussain (Consultant, Anti Drugs Narcotics Campaign) took part alongside colleagues Mr. Murtaza Siddiqui (Secretary, YOCFAN) and Syed Mohsin (School Program lead) to distribute the food.

The meals provided much-needed help to people suffering from addiction whose lives have been adversely affected due to COVID-19 lock down measures currently in place across Lahore.

 

ONE DAY TRAINING WORKSHOP ON NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING USED IN THE TREATMENT OF HIV/AIDS AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS ORGANIZED BY ESPERANCE AND ISSUP PAKISTAN

A one-day training workshop on Neuro-Linguistic Programming used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Disorder was organized by ESPERANCE with the collaboration of ISSUP Pakistan and UMMAH Foundation at Hotel Ambassador in Lahore.

This one-day Training was facilitated by Dr. Ibrahim Siawash. A total of 37 participants including social workers, psychiatrists and psychotherapists from Lahore undertook the training. The participants were chosen based on the fact that they can play a vital role in the treatment and rehabilitation of SUDs.


The main aims and objectives of the training were:

  • To identify the biological, environmental, behavioural, and social causes and consequences of drug use/HIV and addiction across the lifespan and their technique in NLP.
  • To develop new and improved strategies to prevent drug use , HIV and its consequences
  • To develop new and improved treatment services to help people suffering from substance use disorders, achieve and maintain a meaningful and sustained recovery.
  • To Iincrease the public health impact.


The closing ceremony was held with the arrival of Chief Guest Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naz alongside Ms. Saima Asghar, Director ISSUP Pakistan and Mr. Muhammad Aslam President MA Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Sialkot. During the closing ceremony Ms. Saima Asghar shared the Introduction of ISSUP Global and ISSUP Pakistan and motivated the audience to promote evidence-based practices. She also guided them to the Universal Treatment Curriculums to improve their services.
Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naz thanked the organizers and said he would continue supporting such activities and would conduct a UTC training series in Lahore. After the speeches, shields were awarded by ESPERANCE to all honorable Guests and certificates of completion were distributed among all participants.

ONE DAY TRAINING WORKSHOP ON BASIC COUNSELLING SKILLS FOR PAKISTAN’S ADDICTION TREATMENT PROFESSIONALS AT AFHOS CLUB IN LAHORE

Ehsas For Life (NGO), Lahore in collaboration with ISSUP Pakistan Chapter, Youth Forum Pakistan (For Dug Abuse Prevention), M A Jinnah Foundation, (Regd), Sialkot and Nishan Rehab Islamabab jointly organized a one-day training workshop on Basic Counselling Skills for Addiction Treatment Professionals in Pakistan at the AFHOS Club in Lahore.
24 Participants from Lahore and from different SUD Treatment Centers participated in the training. The main objective of the training was to equip participants with advance knowledge and skills and to promote evidence-based practices in Pakistan to enhance the services offered in SUDs treatment. Mr. Shahid Mehmood, Mr. Shafique Anwar, Ms. Maafia Shehzadi facilitated the training as trainers. Chief Guest of the event was Mr. Bashir Ahmed Naz, President ISSUP Pakistan, and Mr. Muhammad Aslam, President M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Sialkot, Mrs. Nagmana Jamil Awan Chairperson Ehsas For Life, Lahore,

Meeting of ISSUP Members and Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team Karachi at BMDRC Karachi-Sindh

ISSUP members and Youth Forum Pakistan’s Team in Karachi arranged a wonderful meeting on 14th March, 2020 at Brain & Mind Diagnostics & Rehabilitation Center (BMDRC) in Karachi, Pakistan. Dr. Sajid Iqbal Alyana Member of ISSUP and Member of the Advisory Board Youth Forum Pakistan chaired the meeting and gave a brief orientation. All other participants shared their valuable ideas to bring positive outcomes in providing services in the field of SUD. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naz President ISSUP Pakistan, Ms. Saima Asghar Director of ISSUP Pakistan and Mr. Muhammad Aslam joined the meeting on the phone and highly appreciated the spirit and willingness to work with this forum and wished them all the best in the journey of spreading awareness and education about Substance Use Prevention. Director of ISSUP Pakistan Participates as Guest Speaker in Awareness Session Organized by Young Blood Daska

Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore, Director ISSUP Pakistan was invited as a Guest Speaker to an awareness seminar organized by Young Blood Daska Pakistan in Punjab College Daska, Sialkot. Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore addressed students and shed light on harms of drugs. He also spoke about crucial development of life-skills in prevention of drug use. He also introduced ISSUP in the seminar and asked the students to join ISSUP. Station Officer, Anti-Narcotics Force, Sialkot, Dr Ranjha, Muhammad Javed, Tanvir Ahmad Mughal, Zahid Jahangir were also present. At the end organizers a shield was presented to Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore Director ISSUP Pakistan by Mr. Tanvir Ahmad Mughal, Mr. Adnan Station House Officer Anti-Narcotics Force, Sialkot station. Mr. Zahid Jahangir thanked the speakers and the host institution.

A large number of Lions Club members in Gujranwala city participated in the ceremony. Mr. Arif Butt Governor Lions Club graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Mr. Atif Rabbani President and Mr. Arif butt, Hafiz Muhammad Irfan presented Bouquet to Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore and welcomed everyone. Mr. Atif Rabani briefed everyone about the Lions Club. Mr. Sana Ullah Rathore presented on ISSUP and offered ISSUP Pakistan's collaboration with the Lions Club. Mr Rana Maqsood Ahmad, Deputy Mayor Gujranwala also participated in the event as a guest.

WEBINAR: Cary Hopkins Eyles on Authentic Self-Care for Addiction Professionals

This webinar focuses on the issue of self-care for addiction professionals and was delivered by ICUDDR Deputy Director Cary Hopkins Eyles.

Many of us are drawn to work in the field of substance use disorders due to our history, family, and personal traits, such as compassion and empathy. While these can be great assets, they can also be detrimental to us personally.

In this webinar, Cary explains how to identify healthy and unhealthy traits, how we can care for ourselves, and what authentic self-care looks like.

Cary has worked in the field of substance use disorders for 18 years. She is passionate about helping professionals in this field to take care of themselves so they can thrive and help those in need. Cary has worked in direct care in non-profit in the U.S., has run Residential, Outpatient, and Criminal Justice treatment programs, and has trained and mentored other substance use professionals. She is now the Deputy Director for the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) and supports the development of addiction studies programs around the world. She is a global trainer in the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC).

National Youth Convention & Anti-Drug Poster/Painting Competition by Youth Forum Pakistan and ISSUP Pakistan Chapter in Lahore

The Youth Forum Pakistan (for drug use prevention) in collaboration with ISSUP Pakistan Chapter and M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd), Sialkot organized the National Youth Convention on 6th February, 2020 at Al-Hamra Art Council in Lahore. The event was funded by Mr. Bashir Ahmad Naz President ISSUP Pakistan and Patron-in Chief Youth Forum Pakistan.

Youth from across Pakistan including all provinces of Pakistan Punjab, Baluchistan, Kaber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Sindh, and Islamabad Capital Territory were invited and participated.

Ms. Saima Asghar, Director ISSUP Pakistan and Senior Advisor Youth Forum Pakistan (for drug use prevention) welcomed all the participants and guests and gave a brief introduction of ISSUP Global as well as the ISSUP Pakistan Chapter.

Mr. Muhammad Aslam, President M A Jinnah Foundation (Regd) and Founder Youth Forum Pakistan gave a brief introduction of Youth Forum Pakistan (for drug use prevention).

Mr. Bashir Amhad Naz welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. Akhtar Malik Provincial Minister and during his speech he assured his continued support for similar activities in the future.

After that a cultural performance by youth of all the provinces was on the programme. The performance included traditional attire and music.

Five guest Speakers were invited and delivered presentations on different topics like Dr. Talat Habib Master Trainer UTCs  (Science of Addiction Counselling Approaches & Attitudinal Healing), Mr. Muhammad Ayub Senior Advisor Colombo Plan (Evidence-Based Prevention Intervention For Substance Use Prevention), Prof. Dr. Uzma Ali Director Institute of Clinical Psychology (Life Skills Well Formed Goals and Achievements), Dr. Hina Imran Associate Professor (Leadership Skills Positive Mind, Positive Vibes, Positive Life), Ms. Tusabe Rebecca Social Activist, Public Speaker gave a presentation on Introduction-Ethical Leadership, Importance of Youth Leadership Skills, Basic Life Grooming for Youth Leadership Skills.

A role play "Drugs are not a life style it’s a choice” was also presented by Youth Forum Pakistan’s Islamabad Team. Songs and Informative Videos were also played during the event. Shields for guests and certificates for all the participants were awarded for the Painting Competition winners and runner ups.
