Session Objectives:

Today saw the end of the UTC training by ISSUP-Kenya for the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) which started in October 2019 for the members and staff of this faith-based organisation. Originally meant to end in June 2020 this cohort's training was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However due to the diligence of the cohort members and with the continuous encouragement of the trainers led by ISSUP Kenya chapter President Evans Oloo and our patron and Chairman of the GCCC Dr. Richard Gakunju, the group had their last training and revision day today in a webinar format.

The International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA) will run its first-ever Virtual Educational Conference between October 4 through October 31.

Strengthening Effective Prevention of Drug Use among Youth through Community Policing

The objective of this conference is to provide a platform for experts of the OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation to discuss collective responses, including by means of community policing, to prevent youth from drug use and abuse, as well as from involvement into criminal networks engaged in drug trafficking, supply and/or distribution.

Summary

The best way to fight against the use of illicit drugs by young people is to prevent it.

Prisons and jails are the largest behavioural health treatment institutions/organizations in every state, and often, especially for those with substance use disorders and mental health conditions, jail or prison are the entry points to Behavioral Health treatment. Once individuals with substance use disorders are released from prison, they have a greater risk of disrupted behavioural health treatment and even fatal overdose.

Session Objectives:

The EUSPR Board has decided to move its Eleventh Conference and Members’ Meeting and Workshops to an online event. The face to face event scheduled October 7th -9th 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal is cancelled.

The decision is taken due to the yet uncertain impact of the corona regulations on international travel and gatherings. The Conference Committee is working on a series of online meetings, webinars, and other virtual scientific activities during the conference week and will publish information in the first week of July 2020.

The 9th International Conference on Hepatitis Care in Substance Users will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, 8 – 10 October 2020.

The INHSU annual conference is a unique opportunity to connect with the global community working to improve health outcomes for people who use drugs including the prevention, treatment and care of hepatitis C.

Join with researchers, policy makers, advocates, practitioners and people who use drugs to share knowledge, learn from each other and amplify the evidence.

About the Event

A recent commentary in Prevention Science, [Sloboda, Z., David, S.B. Commentary on the Culture of Prevention. Prev Sci (2020). https://doi.org/10.1007/s11121-020-01158-8 ] explored the concept of a culture of prevention and what that means to research and practice. The commentary was requested by the Associate Editors of a Special Issue on the topic.

The 16th World Congress on Public Health will take place 12th-17th October 2020 in Rome, Italy.

The theme of the Congress, Public Health for the Future of Humanity: Analysis, Advocacy, and Action, reflects the firm stance that the public health community have an obligation to respond to these new circumstances.

The congress offers excellent opportunities to learn from the latest research and practice to network with experts and colleagues and to expand your professional horizons.  

Abstract submission is open from 1 December 2019 to 1 March 2020.

About this Event

Andrew has developed trauma and ACE informed approaches in North Wales and other parts of the UK and Ireland during the last five years. From 2018 to 2020, he supported the National ACE Approach to Policing Vulnerability Programme in Wales.

Dr. Waihenya and the CEO of Kikuyu hospital Dr. P.Kimpiatu. Other officials present included Rev. Dr. W. Kogo, ISSUP Kenya Executive Dr. Richard Gakunju & Vice president ISSUP Kenya Ms. Susan Gitau. Congratulations to all. 

Today marked the graduation of the inaugural ISSUP-Kenya/PCEA training cohort for UTC. It was moderated by our very own Deputy President, Mwalimu Susan Gitau, and our patron Dr. Richard Gakunju with guest of honour being Governor of Kiambu County, Eng Nyoro. They’ll be sitting the exams soon. Today was presentation of certificates of course completion. Well done to them, and all the best for the exams. (They were a delight to train with)👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS), also referred to as Compassion Fatigue is defined as the indirect exposure to difficult, disturbing, and/or traumatic images and stories of the suffering of others. Now, the fight against two global pandemics plaguing this country: health and systemic racism is amplifying all the factors that lead to compassion fatigue. The Annual General Meeting for ISSUP Kenya, which is mandated by law for all societies and constituted our national conference, was held today, online. There was a good turn out and several resolutions were made which will be ratified by the executive committee before being announced to the broader membership.
